The Vekarus hiking area on the shore of Kotajoki in Tuupovaara.
Where is the
Jänisjoki?
The headwaters of
Jänisjoki River flow from Tuupovaara, Ilomantsi and Eno towards Lake Loitimo in
Kiihtelysvaara. After that the real Jänisjoki River begins. It flows through
Lake Tohmajärvi as far as the eastern border of Värtsilä. On the Russian side it
flows on towards Lake Jänisjärvi and finally empties into Lake
Ladoga.

The beauty of the
Jänisjoki River
The river scenery varies from
the wilderness of the headwaters to the verdant zones of Lake Ladoga. The
Jänisjoki is a water route with services for all its visitors. It offers fishing
enthusiasts tens of rapids and places with strong currents. Stopping places have
been built alongside the river for use by the public. Services are available to
individual tourists as well as to groups.

On Ari Vatanen´s winding roads
to Tuupovaara The village scenes
are soothing to your eye, scenery looked after by many generations. The
Jänisjoki winds out of sight and then suddenly bursts into view again.
Tuupovaara has traditionally been an area of Karelian bards. You see evidence of
Orthodox religion in many small chapels, in Kovero, Saarivaara and Hoilola. The
Korpiselkä Border Hotel is a prime example of border region Karelian
construction skill.
Tuupovaara has made its mark in handicrafts. Soapstone gifts as well as
traditional Finnish leather shoes and boots are local goods of guaranteed
quality.
The number one nature spot is the Vekarus hiking area along the shore of
Kotajoki River. Lean-to shelters, a Laplander´s tepee, a cottage with saunas
which you can reserve in advance - all make for an ideal outing with the
kids.
